Redbud Physical Therapy Now Offers Vestibular Rehabilitation

Lindsay Stoops, Special to the Wagoner Tribune

May 22, 2011 - WAGONER -- Dizziness is a common symptom effecting 30 percent of people over the age of 65. It can effect adults of any age and children as well. Vestibular Rehab is a relatively new treatment for dizziness. There are only three people certified for this treatment in the state of Oklahoma and Jenn Murr, physical therapist for Redbud Physical Therapy, is one of them. She is now treating patients in Wagoner.

Vertigo is the most common form of dizziness. True vertigo is usually due to an inner ear problem. The inner ear gives the brain information about head movement. If this system is not working properly individuals can experience dizziness, vertigo, nausea, imbalance, disorientation, headaches and other symptoms.

Murr is able to give patients relief from a condition that can be quite unpleasant.

You don't have to tell this to Patti Butler. She has experienced it firsthand.

Recently, she found herself experiencing the tell tale signs of vertigo. One un-remarkable morning she sat up in bed and the room was spinning. The only relief from her dizziness was to lie still in bed. She found vertigo to be very debilitating.

"I couldn't even walk without my husband's help," she said.

Butler immediately went to her doctor where she was given what most patients with dizziness receive: a prescription for medication and instructions for bed rest.

She had moderate improvement for two days but then her symptoms returned, full force.

Butler was very surprised at her doctor's suggestion of physical therapy, but was willing to try it.

"I am so thankful Wagoner had a physical therapist who knew how to help with my vertigo" she said.

After four visits, Patti reported resolution of her vertigo and sense of unsteadiness. She says her symptoms return occasionally, but she is guarded with her exercises learned in physical therapy. She was even able to go skiing without any vertigo.

Murr is pleased that people get such great results with this treatment. "I enjoy enabling people to quickly progress to their optimal level of function with the least impact of symptoms possible" she said, adding that "vestibular rehabilitation can help to reduce symptoms of dizziness or unsteadiness, while improving balance and confidence for daily tasks."

Murr is a Wagoner resident and Oklahoma native. She holds a master's degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Oklahoma.
